Unfortunately, this new focus has come somewhat at the expense of the single-player game. However, in co-op, the new inventory system and the proximity-based trade mechanics mean there's an almost constant need to communicate, ensuring you're always in the right place at the right time to provide support. Strategic thinking really does come into play as you plan your tactics in advance, noting when and how you can make the most of your limited inventory.

When you're playing solo there's real satisfaction in the micro-management side of things, particularly now you're given the option of adjusting and upgrading your weapons between each chapter and after restart. For instance, we're big fans of the new real-time inventory system. Indeed, pretty much all of Capcom's significant adjustments to the Resident Evil 4 formula make for a more engaging co-op game. Capcom's greatest achievement is in making each player feel absolutely integral to the success of your mission – whether in the way the developers intended or through sheer co-operative ingenuity. There are numerous examples of obvious multi-play game design – split pathways (demanding sudden tactical changes), dual-switches, smart boss strategies and other cleverly-realised opportunities that accentuate the sense that teamwork isn't just preferable but mandatory to succeed. Perhaps most surprising, given the assumption that co-op was a late addition to the game, is just how fully it's been integrated into the experience.

Thankfully, that's our main grievance with Resident Evil 5 and Capcom has, in almost every area, streamlined its aging series for the better. Yes, it might heighten tension as you're forced to stop and shoot but – as enemies break out the heavy artillery and cover plays an increasing important role later on – it's clear that Resident Evil just isn't that kind of game anymore. That applies to movement, combat and even the game's camera - and, with the likes of Dead Space and Gears of War perfecting third-person play, Capcom's oddly staccato system is simply inexplicable. Now that the franchise has moved firmly away from horror into action territory, it's tough to justify Resident Evil 5's clunky, cumbersome controls. It's not that Resident Evil 5's offerings are bad as such - it's just that we've got much better ways of doing this kind of thing these days. In fact, hands down, the biggest complaint you can reasonably levy at this latest iteration of Capcom's not-very-Survival-Horror series is its wilfully idiosyncratic control schemes. By and large, you know you're playing a Capcom game by the sheer number of preposterous videogame hoops you're expected to leapfrog through in the name of enjoyment. Yes, it might have created some of the single most important franchises in gaming yes, it might be home to some of the most experienced, most talented individuals in the industry but its love of out-dated, counter-intuitive videogame "logic" and dogmatic refusal to adhere to any semblance of modern videogame standards is legendary. Sometimes it's hard not to be totally frustrated by Capcom.
